An Ethereum Developer Goes to Court with Top Lawyer

Going to court with a top lawyer is what is going to face the Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith quite soon. Read to find out who that lawyer is.

The Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith who is facing around 20 years prison time for giving a hand to North Korea to avoid sanctions, now is represented by a big trial attorney Brian Klein from the LA law firm Baker Marquart.

On November 28, the FBI arrested 36-year old Ethereum developer, Virgil Griffith who was charged  with violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by traveling to Pyongyang earlier this year “in order deliver a presentation and technical advice on using cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology to evade sanctions,” according to the US Attorney Office.

The US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman elaborated:

“As alleged, Virgil Griffith provided highly technical information to North Korea, knowing that this information could be used to help North Korea launder money and evade sanctions. In allegedly doing so, Griffith jeopardized the sanctions that both Congress and the president have enacted to place maximum pressure on North Korea’s dangerous regime.”

There were additional comments from Griffith’s attorney Brian Klein:

“I now represent Virgil Griffith and am very pleased that today the judge found that he should be released from jail pending trial. We dispute the untested allegations in the criminal complaint, and Virgil looks forward to his day in court, when the full story can come out,”

He is well known for quite famous cases such as one that included the developer of EOS Block. One for running an unregistered ICO that reportedly raised around USD 4 billion.

There are other multiple cases such as representing Arthur and Kathleen Breitman for the Tezos crowdfunding, Erik Voorhees for a settlement with SEC during an investigation, and others.

Some famous clients of his are a wallet provider Circle and Protocol Labs.

The law firm also stated:

“[Brian] also formerly volunteered as the outside general counsel and chair of the legal advocacy committee for the Bitcoin Foundation. <…> Chambers has recognized Brian as “the leading cryptocurrency trial attorney in the USA,”

There is petition going around that is ran by a lot of people including Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin for releasing Virgil Griffith.
